Rajkot

Rajkot is founded in the year of 1610 by VibhajiJadeja&RajuSandhi. Rajkot was once the capital of the princely state of Saurashtra. Today it is best known as the town where Mahatma Gandhi spent the early years of his life when his father was a Diwan or Prime Minister to the King of Saurashtra.
 

Rajkot is one of the fastest developing cities located at in the centre of Saurashtra region of Gujarat State situated on western part of India. The city has geographical area of 104.86 sq. kms and has a population of 1.3 million plus. Rajkot Municipal Corporation is a local government committed to provide basic infrastructure facilities to the people of the city. RMC is very well known for the managing the city by using private sector participation as well as introduction of innovative mechanism in management to serve people efficiently. City has prepared different plans for improving services and to nullify gap between services and demands.
 

Rajkot is very well connected to all the major Indian cities by air, railway and road. A number of flights operate via the Rajkot Airport by Jet Airways and Air Deccan. A good network of roads also connect most of the major cities of Gujarat such as Vadodara, Junagadh, Amreli, Bhavnagar, Jamnagar, Ahmedabad, Surat etc. Rajkot is a main railway junction of Saurashtra, from where trains to all the major cities of India is available.
 

Culture

 

The people in Rajkot are predominantly vegetarians and are vehemently against any form of hunting. The women in Rajkot are very fond of jewellery. Large chains, pendants and other heavy gold jewellery are a common sight during marriages, festivals and family functions. The attire changes with the season and approaching festivals. The ladies normally wear the Gujarati flavour of the sari and men can be seen in flowing kurtas and in the formal wears. Rajkot is multicultural. One can find many languages, like Gujarati, Hindi, Urdu, and English are well understood. Rajkot is the part of Kathiyawad. Because of this people of Rajkot are also known as Kathiyawadi. Rajkot is frequently referred to as “Rangilu Rajkot” meaning colourful Rajkot. Shopkeepers mostly closed their business between 1:30 pm to 4:30 pm.
 

Rajkot has its own native music genre, called Dayro, which is used to convey folk stories and sayings. Rajkot also inherited Kathiyawadi folk music. The city also has various orchestra groups, which perform professionally. They mainly perform the music albums for Bollywood.
